Sidebar tab 2: Terms

Understanding the Terms Sidebar

The Terms tab provides a comprehensive list of recommended semantic terms to include in your content. These terms are crucial for respecting the semantic and lexical structure of your target keywords and improving your search rankings.

We derive these terms by analyzing all the articles that currently rank on Google for your target keyword, combining their content, and identifying the most effective terms to maximize your article's potential. These terms directly impact your content score, with one component specifically based on the number of recommended terms you use (read the score article to know more).

Term Status and Color Coding

The status of each term is indicated by three distinct colors that show your current usage compared to competitor benchmarks:

  • Green: You have used the term the right number of times or have reached the minimum requirement. These terms are optimally implemented in your content.
  • Yellow: You need to use the term more frequently. For example, if the term "ecommerce" should ideally be used between 13 and 37 times but you've only used it 7 times, it will appear in yellow indicating you need to include it more often.
  • Gray: You haven't used this important keyword at all and should incorporate it into your article. These are missing opportunities that could significantly improve your SEO performance.

Anatomy of a term

Each term in the sidebar contains several key elements that provide important information and actions:

Term Components

  • Term name: The actual keyword or phrase (e.g., "ecommerce")
  • H Icon: A small "H" badge indicates that competitors use this term in headings (H2, H3, etc.). Including these terms in your headings could be beneficial for your content structure and SEO
  • Usage counter: Shows current usage vs. recommended range (e.g., "7/13-37" means you've used it 7 times, but should use it 13-37 times)
  • Color status: Background color indicates optimization status (green = optimal, yellow = needs more usage, gray = unused)

Available Actions

  • Click to copy: Click anywhere on the term badge to copy the keyword to your clipboard

  • Remove term: Click the remove icon (×) to exclude the term from score calculations

Usage range breakdown

The usage numbers (e.g., "7/13-37") provide specific guidance:

  • First number (7): Your current usage count in the article
  • Range (13-37): Recommended usage frequency based on competitor analysis
  • Target: Aim to use the term within the recommended range for optimal SEO impact

  • Needs improvement: Show only terms requiring more usage (yellow status)
  • Unused: Display only terms you haven't used yet (gray status)
  • Headings: Filter to show only terms that competitors use in headings (marked with H icon)

Sorting options

  • SEO Relevance (default): Terms are arranged by their potential SEO impact. We have defined an internal term scoring system to assess what are the most important terms to use.
  • Alphabetically: Click the sort icon to arrange terms in alphabetical order for easier navigation

Best Practices for Term Optimization

To maximize your content score and SEO performance:

  1. Prioritize gray terms: Focus first on incorporating unused terms (gray) as these represent the biggest optimization opportunities
  2. Address yellow terms: Increase usage of terms marked in yellow to meet competitor benchmarks
  3. Use heading terms strategically: Incorporate terms with the "H" icon into your subheadings when contextually appropriate
  4. Maintain natural usage: While hitting target ranges is important, ensure terms flow naturally within your content
  5. Regular monitoring: Check your term status regularly as you write to maintain optimal coverage
